When I first saw a tiny item about Alexander McQueen's death, I hoped it was a rumor.

No such luck. By mid-morning, McQueen's office was confirming that he'd taken his life. McQueen was only 40 years old when he died.

Most outlets reporting the story mentioned that McQueen's mother had passes away a few days prior to his death. Many also mentioned the suicide of his mentor Isabella Blow three years prior.

Jezebel pointed out that McQueen's Twitter account (now deleted) was betrayed an increasingly macabre mindset.

Whatever the reason, we've lost him far too young.
